Guide

I want to be a TEFL Teacher. What do I need to know?

Research the school/s and country you would like to work in.

TEFL schools: majority of reputable TEFL schools ask for a face-to-face TEFL certificate that involves at least 120 contact hours and observed teaching hours; an online course can not fully prepare you to begin your teaching career. A school Director once said: 'Asking me to hire someone with an online TEFL is like asking me to lend my new car to someone who just received their license online, no thank you'.

It is important that you know the type of school you will work in and the type of TEFL certification they require. Be weary of schools that ask for no TEFL or prior teaching experience, this is not the way to begin your TEFL career. Be sure to research the school you would like to work at and get details on what their contracts involve and the time commitment they are asking for.
